Hover Tank was voted as one of the best games to be made with Game Maker at the official forums and it's not hard to see why. The 3D capabilities in Game Maker are limited, resulting in tonnes of bad 3D games, but Hover Tank uses those limitations to make a truly great game; simple shapes are used to create a pleasing atmosphere. HT3D itself is a straight forward shooter: control a tank and blast away at enemies in different 3D environments. Multiple ways to play, including missions and single arena games, means high replay factor. When starting out, practice quite a bit and set the accuracy of the enemies to '0' in the options, otherwise you'll find yourself blasted out of existence fairly quickly.

Just tried this and I must say it has all the right ingredients.
ReplyDeleteThe feel is spot on and the graphics are perfect in a 'Tron' like way.
It is missing a few things....No split screen 2 player option, no LAN support and no multiplayer DM with more than 2 people. These should really be updated.
Another ommision is a lack of on screen scoring or timer. It does inform you of the score and time only in writing every now and then.
I think the maker should concentrate on including the items I've mentioned above before making HT 2.
Version 2 is in the works but I fear he maybe changing the graphics more than they need, as opposed to including the points above.
Still, its a GREAT piece of freeware, no doubt and lots of fun.
Call it 'Tron' Tanks and I've no doubt this will be a chart topper on xbox live.
